NFA Items at White Birch Armory

Thinking about a short barrel rifle or suppressor? At White Birch Armory in Dover, New Hampshire, we take the guesswork out of buying NFA items. Our team is here to guide you from your first firearm purchase to your next addition.

What Are NFA Items?

The National Firearms Act (NFA) is a federal law that regulates specific firearms and accessories, including short barrel rifles (SBRs), short barrel shotguns (SBSs), suppressors, and machine guns.
As of January 1, 2026, the $200 tax stamp has been eliminated for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs — making NFA ownership more accessible than ever. The ATF paperwork, background check, and approval process still apply, but the cost barrier is gone.
Not sure where to start? Our staff is here to walk you through every step of the NFA process, from selecting the right item to submitting your paperwork with confidence.

Understanding NFA Items

Here is a quick breakdown of the most common NFA item categories and what you need to know before buying:

Short Barrel Rifles (SBRs): A rifle with a barrel under 16 inches or overall length under 26 inches. More compact and easier to handle, making them popular for home defense and recreational shooting.

Barrel Length and Performance: Shorter barrels produce slightly lower muzzle velocity, but at home defense and recreational shooting distances, the difference is minimal. SBRs perform exceptionally well in real-world applications.

Suppressors: Reduce sound signature and muzzle flash, making shooting safer for your hearing and more comfortable overall. We carry suppressors across a wide range of calibers and mount styles.

Pistol Braces and AR-15 Pistols: The legal landscape around AR-15 pistol configurations and pistol braces has shifted due to evolving ATF guidance and federal court rulings. Factors like overall length, stock configuration, and lower receiver registration all affect federal classification.

How the NFA Buying Process Works

  1. Choose your item. Browse our showroom or shop online. Not sure what you want? Come in and take your time. Zero pressure.
  2. Complete your paperwork. NFA purchases require ATF Form 4, a passport-style photo, fingerprints, and a background check. Our staff is here to help you through every step.
  3. Wait for approval. Processing times are set by the ATF and can range from several weeks to several months. We keep you updated throughout.
  4. Pick up your item. Take possession at our Dover location. We go over safe handling, storage, and any applicable laws so you leave feeling prepared.

First NFA purchase? We understand the process can feel intimidating. Our team is happy to spend the extra time answering your questions in person and on the phone so you don't walk out feeling uncertain.

Safety and Storage

NFA items come with added responsibility. While there are no federal storage requirements specific to NFA items, proper storage is still critical for safety and peace of mind.

We carry gun safes, lockable cases, and storage solutions sized for short barrel rifles and suppressed firearms. Our staff can walk you through the best options for your household and help you keep your NFA items secure.

Choosing the Right NFA Item for You

Not everyone needs a suppressor, and not every shooter is ready for an SBR. That is perfectly fine. Our team will help you figure out what makes sense based on your experience level, intended use, and budget.

New to Firearms? We recommend starting with our training classes or private instruction to build confidence before making a purchase. There is no rush, and the right NFA item is the one that fits your needs.

This was my best experience at a shooting range by far! Matt and the team were extremely helpful and informative. Having a safety instructor present our entire time shooting made me feel much more at ease—he helped me adjust my stance when handling a larger rifle. This place is awesome; everyone on the team was so kind and we will definitely be back!
