Why Shooters Choose a Pistol

A pistol is compact, which is the whole point. It stores easily, it travels easily, and it is the only firearm most people can realistically carry on them, which is why it dominates the personal defense conversation. That size comes with a trade-off: a shorter sight radius and a one-handed grip make a pistol harder to shoot accurately than a rifle, especially at first.

That gap closes with instruction faster than most new gun owners expect. A pistol is also the most common first firearm, so our training programs are designed with new shooters in mind, and our certified instructors teach firearm safety before anyone touches a trigger.

New to handguns? Our H1 Intro to Handguns class assumes no experience, and we run a women's-only version of the same course for anyone who would rather start in a smaller group.

Types of Pistols We Carry

Our pistol selection covers every major design, and the one that fits you comes down to how you plan to shoot and what you need it to do:

Striker-Fired and Carry Pistols: The striker-fired pistol is the most common design we sell, with no external hammer and the same trigger pull every shot, and its compact and subcompact versions are what most people carry. Slimmer frames and 3-inch barrels trade capacity for comfort, while full-grip models handle range days and home defense.

  • Best for: First-time buyers, everyday carry, home defense
  • Common calibers: 9mm Luger, 380 ACP, 40 S&W
  • Brands we carry: Glock, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, Walther, Ruger, SCCY, Kahr Arms

Hammer-Fired and 1911 Pistols: A hammer-fired pistol uses an external hammer you can cock by hand, and the 1911 is the best known of the group, a single-action design competition shooters still favor more than a century later, with higher-end models built for precision work.

  • Best for: Competition, precision shooting, collectors, anyone who prefers a metal frame
  • Common calibers: 45 ACP, 9mm Luger, 10mm Auto, 38 Super
  • Brands we carry: Colt, Kimber, Beretta, CZ-USA, Staccato, Dan Wesson, Wilson Combat, Rock Island Armory

Full-Size and Duty Pistols: A full-size pistol gives you a longer sight radius, more grip, and more weight to soak up recoil, which adds up to a gun that's easier to shoot well, and duty models built for law enforcement fall into this group.

  • Best for: Range days, home defense, duty use, competition
  • Common calibers: 9mm Luger, 45 ACP, 40 S&W
  • Brands we carry: Glock, Sig Sauer, H&K, Beretta, CZ-USA, FN America, Springfield Armory

Rimfire Pistols and Revolvers: A rimfire pistol in 22 LR is the cheapest way to build skill, with recoil mild enough to work on trigger control without flinching, and a revolver is the mechanically simplest handgun to learn, with no slide to rack and no magazine to seat.

  • Best for: New shooters, high-volume practice, limited hand strength, simplicity
  • Common calibers: 22 LR, 22 WMR, 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 44 Remington Magnum
  • Brands we carry: Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, Browning, Cimarron, Heritage Manufacturing, Charter Arms

AR Pistols: An AR pistol is built on an AR platform with a short barrel under 16 inches and no shoulder stock, which keeps it classified as a pistol rather than a semi-automatic rifle under federal law.

  • Best for: Compact rifle-caliber shooting, home defense, truck guns
  • Common calibers: 223 Remington, 5.56 NATO, 300 AAC Blackout, 9mm Luger
  • Brands we carry: CMMG, Diamondback, Kriss, Sig Sauer, Century Arms, CZ-USA
  • Worth knowing: Adding a stock turns the same gun into a short-barrel rifle requiring ATF approval and a tax stamp before it may be configured that way, so ask our staff before you change anything.

Air Pistols: An air pistol uses compressed air or a CO2 cartridge rather than powder, which makes it quiet, cheap to shoot, and usable in places a firearm isn't appropriate.

  • Best for: Backyard target practice, grip and trigger work at home, supervised youth shooting
  • Common calibers: .177 and .22 pellet, .177 BB
  • Brands we carry: Gamo, Umarex, Benjamin, Sig Sauer Airguns, Crosman

The White Birch Difference

Selection Across Every Design: We stock striker-fired, hammer-fired, 1911, revolver, and duty pistols at competitive prices, alongside rifles and shotguns. We point you toward what fits your shooting, not what's on hand.

Straight Answers on Carry: Our staff carries daily, so questions about holsters, capacity, and all-day comfort get answered from experience. Several instructors came up through military service or law enforcement.

A Training Path, Not Just a Sale: Our handgun classes run from a first-time intro through optics, low-light, and point shooting, with a women's-only course for anyone who'd rather start small. Memberships, league nights, and events keep people here long after the sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are handguns. Semi-automatic handguns, sometimes called automatic pistols, feed from a magazine in the grip and cycle the next round on their own when you fire, which is why capacity runs higher and reloads are faster. A revolver feeds from a rotating cylinder, holds five to eight rounds, and has no slide to rack or magazine to seat, which makes it mechanically simpler to learn. Neither is better across the board, and plenty of shooters keep both.

For most people, 9mm Luger is the answer. It's affordable, available everywhere, and manageable to shoot, which means you'll practice more. 380 ACP is easier to handle in very small carry pistols, 45 ACP hits harder at a higher cost per round, and 22 LR is the cheapest way to build fundamentals. Tell our experts how you plan to shoot, and we'll narrow it down with you.

Yes. We rent handguns by the hour on our indoor range, which is a low-commitment way to find out how a specific firearm feels before you spend money on it.

Every firearm we sell online ships to a federal firearms licensee near you, never to your door. Your local FFL sends us a copy of their license, we ship the pistol to them, and you complete the firearms transaction in person at their counter. Handguns ship via private carrier air regardless of destination, and firearm shipments to Alaska and Hawaii may carry a $30 surcharge. At pickup, you'll complete ATF Form 4473, pass a background check, and meet any additional state requirements before taking possession.
